Night eating syndrome (NES) is an eating disorder where most overeating occurs after dinner. People with NES may eat very little during the day, but wake several times during the night for meals or snacks. The causes of the disorder are unknown, but some experts theorize NES develops due to hormone imbalances or dysfunction of the body’s natural sleep-wake cycles. NES is also associated with depression, insomnia, and substance abuse.
Treatment plans for people with NES may require the patient to eat breakfast every morning, even if he or she isn’t hungry. Therapists may also advise improved sleep hygiene techniques, such as setting a routine bedtime. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is also useful for helping patients think through their actions and develop resistance to triggers. Some patients may also benefit from light therapy or psychotherapeutic medication.
